I’ve waited approximately 180 days and I can’t believe it’s here. If I over sleep, I might miss it. If I don’t get enough sleep, I’ll be cranky and that will ruin my day – the best day I’ve had in a long time. That cannot happen.
Wait. This doesn’t make sense.
It’s coming no matter what –
Over Slept or On Time
Ready or Not.
I love the last day of school!
Even though I’m no longer in school, I look forward to the end of the school year. No more homework – to try to explain. No more books – to move out the way. No more teachers’ dirty looks – during conferences. School is out for the summer and I could not be any happier. You would think I was a 12 year old who just hit a grand slam dunk to win the final game of the season.
Damnit! I’m happy.
So if I’m feeling this good, most kids are feeling pretty damn great this time of year.
The night before, I’m so excited. I can hardly sleep. I debate whether or not I should stay awake to make sure my daughter gets up on time. I do not want anything to ruin the start of my summer vacation. This year aside from getting some much needed R & R, I plan to rediscover myself. I will travel, paint, write, declutter and organize the house, get in shape, who knows, I may even learn a foreign language. I think I have like 90 days so I can’t dilly dally.
The most anticipated day of the school year is finally here; and like a bridge, it is over.
My daughter walks in with a backpack that is stuffed to the gills. I immediately tell her to take out what she wants and to dump the rest. She removes a sheet of paper and empties the remains in the trash.
She looks at me.
I look at her
and smile as if to say job well done. Let the rumpus begin!
I don’t know why, but I asked what was up with the one sheet of paper she saved. She tells me that it’s the summer schedule and she will have band and poms (4 days a week, approximately 4 to 6 hours a day). She would like to do cross country, she wants to volunteer at the hospital and would like to take a dance class and private music lessons.
Just like that, the best day ever had taken a strange turn.
She stole my thunder.
She didn’t mean too, but she did, marking the end of the best day ever and the beginning of a very busy summer.
I’m Just Sayin…(Damn!)
